I’s of Innovation

I’s of Innovation

The I’s of innovation is a system that was created to highlight the diverse, yet inter-related nature of innovation. It helps those for whom innovation and entrepreneurship are new concepts to see through the theory into practical activities and results.

The following concepts, which coincidentally all start with the letter I, are actually part of a continuous process towards the establishment of a culture of innovation. Furthermore, they strengthen and accelerate the innovation process towards a better life and increased wealth. Each one of these concepts is considered to be an essential part and parcel of the others and in constant diffusion.

This system with its contents and processes are known as “The I’s of Innovation”. The I’s of Innovation, as shown in the following diagrams, is divided into three major elements: Ideas, Infrastructure and Implementation. Each of these major elements is divided into several sub-elements, all of which are inter-related; thereby, affect each other. The components and sub-components of the I’s of Innovation are shown below.

GET IT OUT

IDEA

Without ideas there would be no innovation and without innovation there would be no civilization. Ideas are influenced by a multitude of factors and external elements with some being culture specific while others are globally inclined. Ideas have six sub-elements, they are:

  • Individual
Human beings in general and each person in particular, have the ability to create a limitless wealth of ideas. Someone once said that “The mine of ideas is between two ears”. The brain is the hub of all raw materials. Individuals should be encouraged to think creatively in all directions and on all levels so they could share in the paving of their future and that of the world they live in allowing them to enjoy its future successes.

  • Information
Allow access and flow of information in order to further individual capabilities and human resources through drawing on available and existing data and building on it; thus, transferring information into knowledge.

  • Imagination
Encourage imagination during different stages and phases of each individual’s life from birth onwards. This will eventually lead to enhancing all innovation capabilities on multiple levels and on several fronts.

  • Inspiration
Inspire individuals through introducing different variables into their lives including: toys, games, natural and man-made products, art work, music, multiple variant products of similar functions and/or similar products of multivariate functions in alternative exercises and training courses.

  • Inventions
Recognize inventors, introduce and expand all existing scientific exhibitions and use inventions as displayed in specialized museums. In addition, analyze and replicate the thinking and creative processes inventors passed through during their invention journey. This will open doors to advancing creative and innovative thinking within individuals observing these creations.

  • Intellectual Property Rights
Unique ideas can be protected by law and must be protected by their owners. IP Rights need be understood, respected and used by individuals in general and inventors in particular. IP Rights are not widely known among the public even though it is crucial for inventors and those who produce original ideas.

  • Investment
Develop and promote the perception of risk taking and investing in innovative and novel ideas. Investors, bankers and other financing sources need to understand the value of taking chances with new ideas and the considerable amount of wealth innovation brings to the community at large. Hence, Angel Investors need to be rewarded. Dedicated financing schemes for funding start-ups and small businesses are essential and need to be available at fairly reasonable conditions.

  • Incubators
Space and dedicated services provide a complete and flexible system for supporting new and small businesses. The two elements equip business development processes with infrastructure and people. Incubators as such, are designed to sustain these businesses through the early stages of growth and change. Incubators are to be established in different areas, fields and specializations.

  • Industry
Any sector of industry that deals with products, processes, or services is, on one hand, a place for applying ideas and, on the other, a place for evaluating them. Ultimately, industries are end-users of incubator products and mass producers of inventions.

  • Institutionalization
Consolidate governmental systems, education, legislation, etc. to match each particular country’s innovation policies. Initiate and establish systems that endure, grow, develop and encourage excellence.

PAVING THE ROAD

Infrastructure

The second major element is essential to implementing individual ideas as it provides security and stability to the system we live in. Infrastructure realizes innovation and facilitates its achievement. Weak or flawed infrastructure hinders the realization of creative ideas. Its components are made of the sub-elements named below:

  • Interference
Observe and analyze the interference of regulations and legislation in all aspect of life. Attempt to simplify, harmonize or balance these regulations. Moreover, lobby for new and improved regulations that better serve the innovation process.

  • Intra-heritage
Analyze traditions, customs and cultural influences and their impact on shaping thoughts and ideas. Identify inhibitors and deterrents of innovation such as culture of shame and conventional thinking inherent in the socio-cultural fabric of society. Conduct expansive research on society’s living heritage to develop programs, curricula and mechanisms that counter hindering elements and promote learning as a tool of achieving success.

WORKING TOGETHER

Implementation

The third and last of the main I’s describes processes that if implemented by individuals, would result in the success of the innovation. The following six elements are its sub components:

  • Incentives
Establish a reward system for individuals and enterprises who adopt innovation in their lives and at the workplace. This reward system would play a motivating role in implanting innovation as an integral part of individual thinking.

  • Initiation
Encourage taking the first steps towards innovation. Media, conferences and continuous learning systems are effective means. Strengthening initiation comes through building confidence and eliminating inhibitions, particularly, the fear of failure.

  • Integration
Integrate work and knowledge and build on previous experiences and others accomplishments. Introduce the culture of team work, including group thinking and brain storming. Emphasize the importance of networking and building contacts to exchange ideas and facilitate matters.

  • Internal competition
Healthy competition is the spice of innovation. It is the internal challenge of oneself to excel and achieve beyond one’s accomplishments, furthermore, it increases the flow of adrenalin to the brain!

  • Internationalization
Think big, the world is your oyster. Technology demolished all borders and ideas should know no borders. Work locally but excel globally.

  • Indication
Design, develop, and use smart indicators to measure all aspects and phases of innovation. Use quality indicators that are specific, measurable, applicable and set in a time frame.
